I am using Xquartz 2.7.11 I am running OSX Sierra 10.12.2 I recently had to send my Macbook pro in for service. In the interim I have migrated my profile to a loaner Macbook Air ( 2015) and a Macbook Pro ( 2015) On both of these computers with Xquartz 2.7.9 and (2.7.10 and 2.7.11) and an opengl app ( pymol ) I am noticing that Xquartz freezes in an openGL application after a few seconds of 3D molecule rotation. This was not the case with my Mac computer before the hardware breakdown - Sadly didnt know what version of Xquartz I was running a few months back when everything was running smoothly.
Now after a few seconds the three open-close-minimize window circular buttons go gray for a few seconds in the X11 window and then get their red-yellow-green color back.and I am able to rotate-then it freezes again. I can ensure you I am doing nothing computationally taxing and the same operation was a no-brainer before. I have tried reinstalling the Xquartz, running applications under a new User and re-installing the pymol application. Nothing makes X apps performant.
How to install HomeBrew on macOS Sierra and to use as a package manager to install open source applications, need Xcode 8. The easiest way to install various Unix tools and open source software onto Mac OS X is via a package manager, unfortunately OS X doesn't come with one, but fortunately. With Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, and Mac OS X 10.7 Lion installed the X11.app by default, but from OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. Apple dropped dedicated support for X11.app, with users being directed to the open source XQuartz project (to which Apple contributes) instead.
